Why Smart Leaders Celebrate Their People

Image
Why Smart Leaders Celebrate Their People A Distributor Channel Marketing Moment By Desiree Grace The unsung heroes of your success are the people behind the scenes. Behind every great actor is a costumer, a makeup artist, a lighting designer, and a whole crew whose job is to make the star shine. Business is no different. You have a crew, too: suppliers, service providers, partners, and stakeholders who quietly make your success possible. No tips are required, but this is the time of year to pause and reflect on the people who support your business behind the scenes. And then? Thank them. I mean it. Take a moment. Send a text. Write an email. Maybe even pick up the phone. (I know that last one is hard for some of you.) That supplier who saved you with next-day air. That recruiter who found the perfect product manager. The cleaning service that makes your office a decent place to work. The logistics partner who gets your shipments out on time and correctly. Really, where woul...

Keiretsu: Not a Sushi Roll, but Still Delicious for Your Business

Image
Marketing Moment: Keiretsu (pronounced kā-rĕt′soo͞ ) By Desiree Grace Healthy eating. Cleanliness. Politeness. Respect for elders. These are traits we often associate with Japanese culture, and they’re worth admiring. But Japan’s business culture offers equally powerful lessons. After World War II, Japan partnered with the United States to rebuild its economy. (If only that level of civility and collaboration were common practice today. Imagine the progress we could make if adversaries worked together for the greater good.) From that partnership came LEAN manufacturing, Zero Work in Process, and other best practices still shaping global industry eight decades later. One of the most compelling concepts from this era is Keiretsu . What is Keiretsu? Loosely translated, Keiretsu refers to a deeply connected, intentionally cultivated business partnership, one that transcends a standard vendor-customer relationship, and certainly not anything underhanded. Instead, it is an eleva...

Before You Pack the Sunblock, Pack a Better OOO Reply

Image
Before You Pack the Sunblock, Pack a Better OOO Reply by Desiree Grace A Distributor Channel Marketing Moment By Desiree Grace Ready for some R&R? Rushing out the door to leave work behind? Don’t forget the sunblock, the spare charger, and an extra credit card. And please, before you set that “Gone Fishing” vibe, take five minutes to craft a professional, friendly, and useful out-of-office message. Out of office? Who cares? Your customers and colleagues, that’s who. The tone of your greeting matters. Include an emergency contact who has agreed in advance to be your backup, and provide a way to reach you in a true emergency. Your auto-response while on vacation tells people a lot about you. Forgetting to create one also says a lot, and none of it good. A couple of real-world examples: “Out of the office until August 31.” “Hi! I’m out of the office on holiday, returning August 31. While I may not be checking emails, your message is important to me. Bill can help y...

Turning Likes into Gold: Measuring Your Social Success

Image
Turning Likes into Gold: Measuring Your Social Success A Distributor Channel Marketing Moment By Desiree Grace You know you need it- a social media strategy. Whether it’s LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, or even a Substack newsletter, if you aren’t on social media, you simply don’t exist . The age-old marketing conundrum, however, is how to measure what’s working in this newer world. In traditional advertising, you paid for a television ad, you monitored the Nielsen ratings, and you knew how many households were exposed to your message (reach) and how often (frequency). It’s a bit different with social media. First, you have media you own . This is the most similar to ye olde TV ad. Your company’s Facebook page or LinkedIn account- that’s owned. You control what goes in, and you can measure how many people visit, how long they stay (how “sticky” your page is), and even completion rates, like whether they finished that “about us” video. The good news is that you can measure and mo...

Lost in the Market? Let the 5-Cs Guide You

Image
Marketing Moment:  Lost in the Market? Let the 5-Cs Guide You By Desiree Grace Let’s get something straight: Marketing is not a walk in the park. It’s often underestimated, but the importance of good marketing is equal to having a solid map on a remote trail without WiFi. Frameworks like the 5-Cs help us navigate unfamiliar terrain and create order out of chaos. The 5-Cs are your compass, a tool that helps you analyze and strategize, guiding you through the marketing wilderness. You’ve probably heard of the 4-Ps: Product, Place, Price, and Promotion, the classic Marketing Mix. Let’s ditch the amateur level and talk about something more advanced: the 5-Cs. The 5-Cs are a framework for conducting a serious situation analysis. It’s how you take a long, hard look at where your business stands, where it’s heading, and how to outsmart the competition. Think of it like an annual inspection for your car, a health check that could save you from an overheated engine down the road. The...

Press, Prep, Protect: Why PR is a Non-Negotiable!

Image
PR- The Finishing Touch to Your Marketing Plan Desiree Grace Public Relations (PR) is an important tool in a Marketing Manager’s toolkit. While it may seem like a minor or decorative aspect of your company communications, similar to decorative light switches, don’t underestimate the importance of having a PR expert on your team. Just as you need a master plasterer to prepare your walls and finish your ceilings, it’s essential to manage your company’s image and oversee your corporate communications effectively. Let’s break it down. While PR is related to organizational image and is a close skill set to corporate advertising, it’s more than that. The audience for public relations is much broader than your current and prospective customers. It includes ALL stakeholders, people like current and potential employees, vendors, neighbors, the city and county where you work, even government officials, your industry at large, in addition to your customers. The objective with proactive pu...

Tools of the Trade: When Promotion Beats Advertising

Image
Tools of the Trade: When Promotion Beats Advertising By Desiree Grace Sometimes you need a hammer, sometimes you need a mallet. Sometimes you need a crowbar, and other times a pry bar is the right tool for the job. This holds for the marketing trade. You need the right tools for the job. In the case of good marketing, sometimes Sales Promotion is the best tool. Sales Promotion is an incentive used to motivate action. Your target could be end-users, the channel, aka distribution, or it could be business buyers, like the MRO buyer or government procurement gal. Whichever target market you choose, Sales Promotion is gaining in popularity because it is easily measured and is a great way to stand out from the competition. It can also increase the perceived value of your products and services, as well as add value to your channel. I like Sales Promotion because you can put together a strategy and execute it quickly, as compared to traditional Advertising. Also, you can undermine a ...

Your Website Looks Great, But Does It Work?

Image
RHC Marketing Moment: Back to Basics- Your B2B Website Looks Great But Does it Work? By Desiree Grace, Special Projects Consultant Your graphics are fabulous, your people look clever, and the new logo is smart, BUT, are you functional? We see a lot of websites that look great but don’t have a solid foundation. One example of critical importance is a solid cross-reference. Many companies hesitate to put a cross-reference on their website. They fear the competition will use it, they fear if the cross isn’t perfect, it will irritate customers. Newsflash—the competition has already figured out how to cross your products and the customers are more irritated if they cannot self-service a basic requirement such as a cross-reference. You can and should use a disclaimer that the reference is form, fit, and function equal, or, if there’s a doubt, offer to send a sample or a salesperson. Viola! A sales lead! A well-done, efficient cross-reference will save your people and your customers time....

Green or Greenwashed? Customers Can Tell the Difference!

Image
RHC Marketing Moment: Greenwashing Many of you may remember Tom Sawyer tricking his friends into whitewashing Aunt Polly’s fence. This canny trickery is still seen today, only it’s “greenwashing” instead of whitewashing. In Tom’s case, he fooled his friends into doing the work for him. With greenwashing, companies claim they are “green” or engaging in environmentally responsible behavior to gain favor with existing or new customers. This is often a case of all style and no substance or, as a good friend says, all sizzle and no steak. The danger of slapping a green label or purporting to be green is that it’s easy for your trickery to be exposed. Being environmentally sustainable and green can mean many things, but be sure you are doing some or all of the best practices from this list: • Recycling • Reducing paper and packaging • Switching to renewable energy sources • Using energy-efficient lighting • Conserving water • Purchasing sustainable products • Reducing transport...
