Wisely (Or End Up in a Dead End)

A Distributor Channel Marketing Moment

Would you go on a road trip or a boat trip without a map or GPS? Sounds foolhardy and a little scary, too. Nobody wants to run out of gas or end up in a fleabag motel.

When communicating with your customers, you need the advertising equivalent of a map: the communication model and a clear sense of direction. You need to know where your customers are and where you’re going. That’s where channel choice matters.

Would you try newspaper classifieds to reach Gen Z? Would you contact industrial hand‑tool customers on Instagram? Of course not. These ridiculous examples illustrate the importance of understanding the Communication Model.

Good communication means defining the correct target market, refining your message, speaking to people in their language, amplifying your message above the noise or clutter, paying attention to feedback, and, for today’s discussion, choosing the right channel. Channel is the medium you use to communicate your message, and that choice is critical. Even if you get everything else right, a mistake in channel choice can be a costly waste of resources.

Channel choice done right means finding out where your customers spend their time, where they share information, and where they search and research. Once you understand that essential part of your customers’ lives, that’s where you go to meet them and connect with them.

In the old days, the journalist went to the corner bar where the judge, prosecutor, and court reporter hung out after a long day in court. Today, you connect in the digital world, but you still need to find the right bar… er, site. LinkedIn is a great place to meet professionals, for example. Gen Z and Gen Alpha love TikTok. Do your homework and meet your customers in their preferred location.

  • You’ll maximize your advertising investment by reaching the maximum number of customers when you choose the right channel.
  • Your message will resonate and be correctly understood when you choose the right channel. Instagram, for example, forces concise, short‑form video.
  • Choosing the right channel saves time and is an efficient way to connect with your customers.
  • Channel choice also matters when it comes to data and identity security. Don’t overlook that aspect of customer engagement.
  • Cost per contact and total cost matter. Choosing the right channel means you’re spending your advertising investment wisely and getting the best ROI possible.

A lot of your communication work is now complete and well done. Stay tuned for more practical information on how you can leverage the communication model to meet your people where they are. No more wandering around rudderless.
